What would a chakra imbalance look like in your child?

Asthma, hunched posture, a perfectionist mentality and two broken wrists = heart chakra imbalance
Near sightedness, nightmares, headaches and a love of fantasy genre = third eye chakra imbalance
Chronic strep throat, grinding of teeth and quiet demeanor = throat chakra imbalance
Victim mentality, digestive issues and low energy = solar plexus imbalance

All of these traits are a group of conditions that are the outward manifestation of an energy imbalance.

Do you recognize any of these traits in your children?

I bet you recognize some and I know I do. They all have existed in my home.

How I Began to Study the Chakras in Children

When I first started teaching Yoga Teacher Training programs based on the chakras, I was using every day examples of chakra imbalances to illustrate how they showed up in real life. As I was giving certain examples over and over, I realized that the chakra imbalances most familiar to me were those of my children. Their imbalances were textbook presentations and it made it so easy to teach my students about them. I would always see eyes lighting up and heads nodding yes as they recognized the same traits from their family.

Chakras In My Home

Of course, I want what is best for my children and I want to help them have their best life, so I started really paying attention to their energy centers. I noticed when they got even more out of balance (presentations at school bringing up fear, summer vacation and no structure) and I noticed what I could start doing around the house to help bring their individual energy centers back into balance.

end nightmaresThe first place I really centered my attention was on our bedtime routine. Specifically on my child that had the nightmares. They were affecting his (and my) sleep and we were both waking up tired and cranky. I knew his third eye chakra (6) was overactive. He always had been very imaginative and had recently developed a huge interest in the fantasy genre (Rick Riordan to be exact!).

To bring balance to an over-active third eye chakra (home to creativity, vision and imagination), I needed to get him into his body and out of his head before he could fall asleep easily.  I accomplished these two goals with a visualization and a massage.

He first received a short massage with lavender essential oil to get him back into his body.  An over-active third eye chakra draws the energy up in the body and massage counters that by grounding and bringing the energy back down into the body.  He also needed to “clean the screen”- his internal screen/mind that was going nonstop with creativity.  I would walk him through a screen clearing guided imagery where he walked through his whole day, then wiped it away and replaced it with his vision for the next day.  [I give the script for this visualization in my E-Guide "Children and Chakras: The Parent's Guide to Understanding and Balancing Your Child's Energy".]  He usually was asleep before it ended and slept the whole night without nightmares.  The very first time we used the screen clearing and the massage, he did not have any nightmares that night.  If I didn’t do the routine, he would have them.  It took a few consistent weeks of the routine to end the nightmares permanently.

Stopping the endless loop that was playing in his mind was key to falling asleep. I know many adults that experience this and I recommend having a guided relaxation on hand to help you fall asleep when that happens.

The Birth of “Children and Chakras: The Parent’s Guide to Understanding and Balancing Your Child’s Energy”

Throughout the next few years, I noticed how often chakra imbalance issues were mentioned in casual conversation among parents. To me, it was crystal clear which chakra imbalance was at the root of each issue. I searched for information about children and the chakras and didn’t find much. But knowing how important and revolutionary this information could be to a parent and a child, I created an E-Guide to teach parents how to understand what their child’s energy system looks like, how to identify energy imbalances and to provide daily activities that balance the chakras.
